ESTABLISHING “A STRONG HIGHER EDUCATION ADVANCEMENT PROGRAM”
DESIGNED TO FOSTER TRUE SCHOLASTIC ABILITIES
Okinawa Shogaku High School made its mark in the post-war education of Okinawa when a graduate finally won admittance to the elite University of Tokyo, a feat which set the precedent for other students to follow. Since the removal of the “psychological complex” barrier, numerous graduates of our school have gone on to other prestigious universities, national and private, as well as the local national University of the Ryukyus. Notable in the local educational arena is the fact that a greater share of our graduates has successfully passed the stringent exams for entering the medical and dental departments of various universities, particularly the University of the Ryukyus Medical School.
Aside from academic advancements, our school has also excelled in the sports arena. It has won the national championships for judo and baseball and is recognized as one of the five high schools in Japan to have achieved such an accomplishment. As we endeavor and continue to make significant contributions to the progress of education, we add impressive records to our athletic department year after year.
Our school is dedicated to building an even stronger program in order to ensure the continued quality of our students, who will be the leaders of tomorrow. Please allow me to voice my personal opinion on education below.
What I ask of our future students is to always set goals for their own sake. I want all of our students to experience the joy that constant efforts and progress to achieve their goals can bring. In order to accomplish their goals, our students need to consider the following steps: When, What, and How to go about achieving their goals. And after achieving these goals, they should reflect back and ponder this question: ‘Was the way I achieved this goal the best possible method? Is there a better way to go about it next time?’ In other words, students need to strive continually to improve upon their past accomplishments and efforts. As the saying goes, “practice makes perfect,” and continued efforts become a part of everyday life. It is more a case of becoming accustomed to learning rather than the actual learning process itself.
Students must never forget the virtues of gratitude and service. These two virtues are essential if you are to impart a feeling of emotional warmth and create a pleasant society. It is not an overstatement to say that there is no greater skill than that of showing appreciation. The act of voluntary service to the community and the people around you shows the appreciation you feel for the blessing of life itself.
Okinawa Shogaku Jr. and Sr. High Schools pledge to make every effort possible to fulfill our responsibilities and obligations as a preparatory school and to continue its efforts to advance academic achievements. We aim to nurture and promote the human resources of Okinawa Prefecture and build an ambitious and culturally conscious school, one that stresses students to “Be Courageous, Be Respectful, and Be Serene.”
